Silk is a delicate fabric and should be handled with care. However, it is fairly easy to clean. It has a naturally tendency to release dirt quickly and does not always require dry cleaning to keep its quality.

Washing and Maintenance Silk Scarves

00001. Fill a clean sink or large bowl with very cold water.

00002. Add a very mild detergent such as Woolite or Dr. Bronner’s Baby Soap (this soap will help preserve the garment’s natural oils) to the water and agitate the water to mix in the soap.

00003. Gently hand wash the silk item by pulsing the water with your hand several times to move the soapy water through the scarf.

00004. Empty the sink or bowl.

00005. Rinse the silk scarf in cold water until all soap residue has been removed.

00006. Add a few drops of hair conditioner to the rinse water to keep the silk soft and flexible.

00007. Press the water out of the silk scarves by rolling it in a towel. Do not twist or wring, as this will damage silk scarves

00008. Hang the wet garment and allow it to air dry completely. Do not hang silk scarves in the sun to dry.

00009. Iron only when absolutely necessary on the back side of silk scarf. Use a cool iron with a press cloth between the iron and the fabric.

Additional Tips and Advice

· Unless the tag on your silk fabric recommends dry cleaning, it should be avoided as dry cleaning will shrink certain types of silk.

· Use lemon juice or vinegar to spot clean, but test an inconspicuous area first to test for colorfastness.

· Be gentle – it’s the agitation from washing that causes this material to shrink. Even the gentle cycle on the washer is too rough for this delicate fabric.

· To keep silk from yellowing, add ½ cup of vinegar to the rinse water.

· Since silk is a natural fiber, do not use bleach as it will damage the fibers.

· Be careful not to let hairspray, perfume, cosmetic directly touch the silk as the alcohol will damage the fabric

· If you have hard water, you may want to add a tablespoon of borax to the water prior to washing.

· Put silk scarves on hanger or in a flat drawer, otherwise the silk scarf will be creased

How to tell the real silk from imitated silk (polyester)

1.Do a touch test

Basically silk is very smooth and soft, hand feeling is soft, polyester is hard, but now the polyester are getting closer to silk, so another way that you can cover scarf on your skin, at first,it feels cold, and it becomes warm, the polyester one don’t have this feeling, the silk is shining, polyester is kind of dark

2.Tell from price

Like a 90x2250px silk scarf, the cost is no less than 10usd,if it is much less than it,no doubt it is either imitated silk or a defective one

3. Tell from the elastic

Real silk fabric has very good elastic, you can pull the scarf from two sides to test it,besides silk is easily creased

4. Burning test

There are always some threads on silk scarf, cut some and burn it with flame, the real silk will be like cotton, can be easily crush into ash,but the polyester one hardly crushed, the real silk smells same like hair, but the polyester smells like a plastic bag

5. Hemming

Most of polyester scarf only can be machine sewed, it is not soft enough for hand rolled, but the silk ones are always hand rolled since hand rolled hemming will makes scarf looks more elegant
